Book NowPRP is a treatment that involves injecting a small amount of your plasma into soft tissue and joint injuries, to speed up the body’s own healing process.
Platelets are a part of our blood which aid in clotting and tissue healing. They contain and release a number of growth factors (special biologically active proteins that play an important role in tissue healing and regeneration).
PRP accelerates your body’s healing of musculoskeletal injuries naturally, without subjecting you to significant risk or adverse effects.
Your initial consultation will determine whether PRP is the appropriate treatment for you. If so, PRP can be performed on the day. Sometimes the doctor may require some further scanning/investigations prior to having PRP therapy.
The procedure itself will take approximately 30-40 minutes. During this time the doctor will take some blood from your arm (much like taking blood for a standard blood test), and then your blood will be placed in a centrifuge to separate the plasma and platelets from the blood. The PRP portion of your blood is then injected into the injured area/s.
Our doctors use a local anaesthetic so that the pain from the injection is minimal during and after the procedure. Following the procedure, you may drive home however it may be appropriate to have someone with you should you like some company following the injection.
Your doctor will advise if any restrictions on activity apply.
A course of PRP injections may be required. This will be performed over a period of 4-8 weeks.
Before PRP Treatment
Please let us know if any of the below apply and we will advise further.
Please note
As plasma is taken from your own blood, there are no risks of disease transmission or allergic reactions.
Sometimes PRP may briefly irritate the condition. These effects should subside within a few hours to days. If pain is severe or you have any concerns, please contact us.
